What are adverse effects of having a neighbor whose business is butchering pigs?!

Question:

What are adverse effects of having a neighbor whose business is butchering pigs?

We live in the suburbs mainly because of the fresh air and peaceful way of living. That ended when a family which owns a meat shop moved in next door. They actually process and cook the meat there and the stench of raw meat almost always pervades the air. We also noticed that there are more flies in the area. I am concerned since I am pregnant and I want to know the adverse health effects of being exposed to air which stinks of raw meat. I think our other neighbors have already filed a complaint with the local authorities but I have not heard of any development to date. Hope you can help me on my query. Thanks in advance.

Answers:

I would also file a complaint with the Planning or Zoning Department and the health department. Unless the zoning on their parcel is different than yours, then this type of use is almost definitely illegal. I'd also call the health department - it's almost a certainty that they are violating health codes. The more complaints they get, the more likely they are to act quickly. Keep in mind it may take some time for an inspector to get out there. They get lots of complaints and unless it's something life threatening, it may take a week or two. If you call and haven't heard anything in a couple weeks, call back and ask the staus of your case.

What they are doing is called a nuisance - not necessarily dangerous to you but definitely a disturbance to the neighborhood. Most zoning codes have language prohibiting uses that cause dust, noise, odor, etc. in residential zones.
