Thanks for the answers so far. The doctors wanted to put her on Dyalisis, but she has a DNR, and just wants to go. She had a massive stroke about 4 years ago, and she's been deteriorating ever since. We know she's going to die, we've called hospice, and she's home now. I was just wondering a couple of different things. 1. If her kidneys are functioning at 3.9, how much worse can they get? Does it go up to 5? 10?
and 2. The doctors at the ER told us that she has a month, maybe 2. Does this sound correct?

Again, please list sources. Thanks so much.

Answers:

My guess is that she had a blood test for creatine. Normal is 0.6-0.9, if her kidneys are only functioning at 3.9% she would already be on dialysis. If they are functioning at 10% you can be put on a waiting list for a transplant for a cadavear kidney and are usually on dialysis. Cr of 3.0 and 3.9 is signicantly higher than normal. She should make an appointment to see a nephrologist (a Dr. that specializes in kidney disorders) without delay. They can help her with medications and diet to prolong the need for dialysis. I am a kidney pt. and have had a transplant, been on dialysis. Good luck with everything.

Added info. 1.Yes, it can go up to 5 and yes even 10, she will probably feel pretty sick at 10, without medications I'm just not sure. Fluid will accumulate in her lungs making breathing difficult and toxins will build up in her system. There is no magic number to predict this.

2. I can't tell you how long she will live, that would be difficult to predict as well, you said she had a stroke and has been deterioating every since so I'm guessing there are other issues to think about too. The fluid accumulation is going to be hard on her heart, without medication it could well be sooner. I'm sorry I can't help you more. Good move getting hospice they deal with issues like this and may be able to give a more specific answer.
