Nasty mole on back?!

Question:

Nasty mole on back?

My husband has this funny looking mole on his back. It is really dark and odd shaped. It also rises up a little. I told him that he should go to the doctor to have it removed, but he says that he has had the mole for a long time and doesn't see what the big deal is. Should I be concerned about the mole or is he right and not to worry about it.

Answers:

It would be extremely wise to have the mole checked to make sure it is not abnormal. Even if he has had it a long time, moles can change and become cancerous and this can be extremely serious, even fatal.

The dermatologist will decide if it needs to be removed and biopsied.

You can't be too cautious when it comes to skin changes -- take it from someone who knows. My husband, age 30, had a malignant mole removed from his back. Sixteen months later he died -- it was melanoma, and it metastasized to his liver, kidney, and finally his brain, killing him at 32.

I am not trying to scare you, but after that horrendous experience I always tell people to watch skin changes very carefully. If it's nothing, great, you haven't lost anything by getting it checked out by the doctor. If it is something to worry about, getting it removed promptly is extremely important.

Good luck.
