Hiccups occur when Diaphagm is irritated by Phrenic nerve.this produces jerky movements of diaphragm,hiccups may occur in several other medical conditions such as Uremia or excessive thirst,yes a person might experience hiccups during sleep , specialy if he has taken too much alcohal or chillies
