Is this brain death?!

Question:

Is this brain death?

I just found out that one of my closest friends was in a terrible car accident on thursday. I am hearing that her vitals are stable but that she has no brain activity. I understand this to mean she is brain dead, is this correct? The doctors, nurses--nobody is mentioning brain death and focusing largely on her vitals but after her second eeg there is no brain activity.....and still no discussion of chances for recovery...

Answers:

Lack of brain activity can indicate brain death I am afraid, however, as the brain has undergone trauma, it may be substantially swollen thus preventing activity at this stage.

I am afraid the family may be faced with the difficult situation of continuing with life support, or switching off life support. However, where there is life there is hope and the family will not be asked this unless the hospital staff are certain that all hope has been lost.

My kindest wishes to you and your friends family. xxx
