Gaining weight??!

Question:

Gaining weight??

Ive asked this sort of question a few times and not really got any good answers so ill try again.

Im trying to gain 1.5 stone (which is VERY hard as im naturally very slim and no matter what i eat i dont put on weight)

Im seeing a dietition every month, but I need to eat 2000 calories a day which im finding quite hard as most of the foods have "lower calories" in now!!!

I do find it hard to eat alot at one sitting, and prefer to have 3 meals (not that big) but i like to snack alot!

Any ideas what i can eat to get loads of calories? A snack or something that i can eat? (i dont like nuts and have tried weight gain shakes)

Hey Jems!

First of all, try to eat at least 5 times a day, you'll need to get as much food in as you can if you are a hard-gainer. I needed as much as 4000 calories a day myself. Shakes, pasta, loaded backed yams, oatmeal, and trail mix all helped me a TON! I have gained a very good amount of healthy weight while doing some weight-resistance exercises 6 days a week and cardio up to 3 days a week. I did curls with dumbells, quats, toe-touches, yoga, biking and walking. These all helped me to gain nearly ALL muscle weight. Not bulging muscles either...very toned.

Yams have helped me a ton. They are great for you, but the carbs and fiber really help pack on the pounds! You also get plenty of vitamin A to boot! Potatoes work, too. Though those aren't *quite* as good.

Milk is also great...especially whole, farm milk. The calcium is also good for your bones. You can also get evaporated milk, it has all the nutrition of a cup of milk in a half cup!

Yogurt, especially sweetened whole milk yogurt has about 200 cal a cup. Stonyfeild a Fage are my favorites.

Red meats. Not the super-high fat ones, more like the 80% to 85% lean beef. That will help add some essential fats to your diet in order to help weight gain. When not in insane amounts, red meat is really quite good for you.

Salmon is high in Omega-3's and great for you. Yummy and packed with protein, it's one of my favorites.

Eggs-a GREAT source of protein! Keep the yolk, it is important for balance the egg so your body can use it better. Raw or slow-cooked eggs are best because then the protein does not get ruined. If you don't like the thoughts of raw, try hard-boiled.

Olive oil/coconut oil/flax oil are all terrific oils to use in cooking. Add oil to chili for some extra taste and healthy calories!

Oatmeal is a HUGE food among body-builders in a bulking phase. Good carbs, fiber, and complete protein! Not to mention oatmeal is very versitile; you can add any creams, fruits, sweeteners, or nuts you would like! Ready-to-eat cereal is good, too. I really like back to nature and bob's red mill cereals if I don't have oatmeal. You can try all sorts of cereals for variaty.

Beans, peas, and lentils are another versitile, high-fiber food. Fiber is very good for weight gain and keeps your system moving. Beans have 100 calories for a simple 1/2 cup and can be used in soups, stews, stir-fries, omelettes....anything really!

Corn is a good source of carbs and helps you get your veggies, too! Not much fiber, but a good source of vitamins and other healthy stuff. A great weight-gainer, too!

Avacodo! These fruits are high in healthy fats and calories. You can make guacamole out of them and dip pita bread in it! YUM! Hummus is another yummy dip.;)

Dried fruit is another great choice. Dried fruit has the nutrients of fruit while being in a smaller package. When you need to gain weight, you need to eat a LOT, so dense foods are great now.

Bananas are the BEST fresh fruit you can eat when looking to gain weight! It is great for you and very quickly packs the calories. It's something that I have gained weight well on. Coconut is good, too. Both are awesome together in oatmeal.

Speaking of coconut, coconut milk has 130 cal and TONS of healthy fat in a single 1/3 cup! THAT'S 390 CAL IN A CUP OF LIQUID! You can mix it with whole milk and a little honey for a sweet treat.:)

Veggie juice and prune juice are good for drinks along with milk. While you should still drink some water, drinking calories will be very helpful. Just make sure what you're drinking has SOME nutriton to it. Avoid soda, fruit juice without fiber, etc...

Cheese is good. Dairy is very importent to get a healthy weight, and not just for losing! I love cheese because it is dense, tasty, and full of calcium!

Pasta, brown rice, and wheat bread are two wonderful things to eat! If you get high-quailty bread and pasta, they are also REALLY good for you! Grains are essential to a gaining for a healthy weight.

How about a combo of each? Mac and cheese! I LOVE Annie's mac and cheese! One cup of the deluxe mac and cheese has 320 cal!

If you need a fast snack or meal, try Kashi go lean bars. I know, it sounds werid to be eating a "diet" food, but their bars have 300 cal a bar! There's also organic food bars-I love them! They are great weight gainers as well!

Begals are the last, but certainly not lowest cal food on my list! You can get 300-400 cal from just ONE!

You can also consider Ensure Plus or Boost Plus drinks if you haven't tried those. They do contain sugar, but that's the part that does the most weight gain. They have about 300 cal for one cup. Go to the links below for more info. Your doctor may be able to get you a discount on them.

I wish you the best of luck! Just remember not to fret too much about gaining a lot of weight...if you are naturally thin that's just how your body is happy. As long as you hold a BMI of 18.5 that should be good enough. Remember to always practice self-worth! You are loved for who you are obviously since you are enganged! Remember to be happy for what you have even if you are a little thinner than you'd like.
