Vegan Question...?!

Question:

Vegan Question...?

I recently began vegan a few months back but have now noticed my hair is breaking all over the place. Could it be I'm not getting enough calories? Any ideas?

Answers:

Hair breakage is usually from a dietary deficiency, specifically a lack of iron, protein, zinc and/or biotin, all of which are found most abundantly in grains and/or meats. Seeing as how we vegans have eliminated the meat here is how I supplement:

I take Vegefuel to make sure I get enough protein. At 32 grams of soy protein per serving it is a better source of protein than any meat. It's a powder that you mix into liquid. It's pretty gross but I mix it into a cup of juice, hold my nose and chug it down.

I also take a daily vitamin supplement (chewable Centrum) for the zinc and biotin, which is a B vitamin, and a daily iron supplement (Ferro-Sequel). Women, even meat eaters, don't get enough iron so the iron supplement is really important if you are female.

Good luck, and congrats on becoming a vegan.
