What type of anemia would I have if my Hct and RBC are low, but my HGB and ferri!

Question:

What type of anemia would I have if my Hct and RBC are low, but my HGB and ferritin levels are normal?

Answers:

It all depends on exactly where your lab values fall within the bounds of normal/low/ high. There's low and there's LOW. There's also low-normal and high-normal or low/high just outside bounds of normal.

Hgb is probably a better value to go with over the HCT since it is directly measured while the Hct is calculated.

I took this from Emedicine which I will put up as a link below. It was the only one that jumped out at me.

"Diminished production of RBCs is suggested in all patients without evidence of either blood loss or hemolysis. Thus, a patient with anemia without evidence of bleeding or iron deficiency with normal indirect bilirubin and normal or decreased reticulocyte count probably has a defect in the production of erythrocytes. Many of these patients have pancytopenia or other abnormalities of the leukocytes or the platelets that can be detected with an examination of a peripheral smear. When this group of disorders is suspected, the most important laboratory test is a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration. The bone marrow biopsy permits categorization of these disorders into 3 separate groups: (1) aplastic or hypoplastic, (2) hyperplastic, and (3) bone marrow replaced with nonhematopoietic elements (infiltration of bone marrow) "

This DOESN'T mean it's what you have. You may not be anemic at all. Talk to your doctor about your results and their significance within the bounds of the other symptoms you are having.

The link below gives you the entire Emedicine entry on anemia. I hope it helps. Remember, the results can only be assessed by looking at ALL symptoms within the bounds of your test results.
