What can I do about my worries?!

Question:

What can I do about my worries?

I'm really worried about certain aspects of my health and I'm worried that if they go left unchecked it could have serious consequences. Usually I never say that I don't feel like myself, but when I am telling my mum about my worries now, she just thinks I'm being silly. I haven't been to the doctors in years for a check up or anything and I'm seventeen. I know it seems silly for me to want to have my mum book appointments and all, but how can I get her to understand how I feel about my health when she just laughs it all off? ...Help!

Answers:

Do you have reasons to be so worried? What I mean is are you in some kind of pain or do you see something wrong or are you just worried? Could it be that you don't have insurance or there is another financial reason why it may not be easy for your mother to take you for a checkup if she can't see anything wrong?

If you see or feel a physical pain, tell your mother about the specific pain and not your worries about it. If something doesn't look right, show her.

If you don't have a specific pain and are just worried, that doesn't seem really normal for a girl your age. I was much older than you before I started worrying that I might have something seriously wrong with me. Usually at your age most people feel as though they're young and will live forever. If you are just worried, maybe you just need to talk to someone about it. Since your mother doesn't seem to understand, is there a school counselor or nurse you can talk to? Maybe another relative?

Another thought is that if money isn't the reason for her not taking you "for no apparent reason", maybe you could point out that you are almost at the age where every girl should get their first pelvic exam - which is usually about 18. Maybe she will go ahead and take you just to set your mind at ease if you point this out to her. Below are a couple of sites that even mention going before then. Read them and see if showing them to her might help.

Good luck! I hope you are fine.
