What is Scoliosis?!

Question:

What is Scoliosis?

Recently we noticed that the back bone of our 12 year-old niece is showing lateral curvature (at pelvis slightly curve to right hand side). After X-ray & checked by orthopaedic doctor, we were told that it's still OK, and said this is named as Scoliosis & the girl is unable to grow higher than present height (+/- 159 m), then adviced to take X-ray half a year for observation. No further advice from the doctor. We need more information. Please advise, if anybody knows and hv experience with Scoliosis. Thank You.

Answers:

I have idiopathic thorastic scoliosis which means ( unknown cause of curvature of the spine in the thorasic area)
They only found out by accident that I had a curved spine when I hurt my hip at school and had to go to hospital.
I had to wear a body brace for 6months only to find it had made it worse and I had to have a spinal fusion and metal rods inserted. I have a perfectly straight back now that I can't bend ( I can bend from the hips but my spine wont curve to shape my shoulders if you see what I mean) and everyone thinks I do yoga lol. This was 9 years ago. The surgeon said some cases are a complete mystery and at times can be unavoidable. But certainly maintaining a straight posture and carrying weight evenly across your back, like a heavy bag, or carrying a child evenly across your body, will together help keep your spine as healthy as possible. Also when picking up heavy things from the ground, bend from the knees.I'd get someone to check your spine regularly if your concerned because no one knew about my spine until it was too far gone.
