What do you know about anxiety attacks?!

Question:

What do you know about anxiety attacks?

two nights ago at about 5 am i had a very bad anxiety attack after smoking pot. i went to the hospital for it and they told me it was because i smoked. Yet the next night i had another one, not so big though but i had to go home. and today at work, on my first day at the job i ate food at lunch and then i puked. and then had a anxiety attack and didnt know what to do because i was around a bunch of people i didnt know. but after the anxiety attacks happen, my chest hurts and my heart beats harder. so im constantly thinking another one is going to happen. im getting put on medication on tuesday, but thats a while from now, what should i do until then? and what can i do to stop them other than medication? and what should i tell myself whenim having a panic attack? i try and tell my self that its going to be okay and just breath but i still freak out. i think that the anxiety problems are causedby all the stress ive been in lately.with my grandfather dying, fighting with my boyfriend etc.

Answers:

I had panic attacks for years. When i'd had enough I went to a therapist, and within a few weeks I was done. That was in 1993 and I haven't had one since.

We talked about the things in my life that made me stressed out. Then we worked on relaxation techniques that also helped me notice earlier when my body was showing signs of stress.

Finally we worked on an "emergency" breathing technique that has never failed to prevent anxiety from turning into panic. At the first sign of worrisome anxiety (like getting on an airplane):

1. Inhale, making it last to the count of 4
2. Hold it to the count of 4
3. Exhale making it last to the count of 4
4. Wait for the count of 4

Repeat!

By controlling your breathing you make it much harder for your body to maintain the state of false panic.

Get some help, you can definitely control this and you might not even need medication.
