Answers:

If you want to become a forensic pathologist, you can count on 12-15 years of post high school study according to this site:

For other pathology careers, Dr. Debra Hanks on this site:
http://www.premierpathology.com/www/page...
offers this information:

Pathologists are experts in the use of laboratory tests to diagnose disease and to assist physicians in their treatment of disease. To become a pathologist, a physician (a medical school graduate who has already earned a Medical Doctorate) typically studies for five or more years – more than many other medical specialists – and passes a series of rigorous exams. Once each exam is passed, the pathologist is "board certified" in that pathology specialty.

In a medical laboratory, a pathologist is responsible for many laboratory tests that are performed on tissue and/or fluid specimens to diagnose underlying diseases. The medical director is responsible for the quality and accuracy of laboratory test results.

While few patients may ever meet their pathologist, he or she assists your physician and helps to diagnose your disease so it can be treated. Often refer to as "the doctor's doctor," the pathologist's role as a consultant to your physician earns them a position of high regard among their colleagues."

A good overview of laboratory careers is at the Virtua site:

It offers this information, plus much more:

How do you become a lab scientist?
Associate degrees and clinical experience are offered at colleges, hospitals and the military. In addition to this technical training, bachelor degree programs teach the theory of lab medicine (i.e., hematology, biochemistry, medical instrumentation, microbiology) along with statistics and managerial skills. The degreed scientist can also choose to specialize in the different disciplines, such as blood banking or cytology.

After obtaining a degree, it's required practice to achieve certification via standardized testing by a nationally recognized board. Most opt for certification from the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Those that pass the exam can use the initials MLT(ASCP) for Medical Laboratory Technician or MT(ASCP) for Medical Technologist.

If you go to the American Society for Clinical Pathology site and click the Career Center link, you'll find a lot of information to help you set your goal.
