What difference to tonsils make if they come out?!

Question:

What difference to tonsils make if they come out?

I see on the internet that some doctors are against having tonsils removed whereas some say it makes no difference, do they have a use and what are the negatives for them no longer being there. Mine are quite large and I think they give me bad breath because of being infected and swollen alot, do they really make a difference?
Also someone told me tonsilitis is contageous, but I didn't think infections could be passed on, so is there truth in that as well?

Answers:

The bad breath could be caused by tonsil stones or tonsiloliths, they will also cause the tonsil to swell and be painful sometimes... I have them as well. To see if you do, go to the mirror and use your finger to actually open the tonsil, if you see a white or yellow type of substance, then you have them. I used to get tonsillitis on a regular basis, but my doctor didn't want mine taken out. Since I started cleaning out the pockets of stones, I haven't had it in almost 2 years. Your tonsils do serve a purpose too, they are there to trap bacteria and infection from going further into your throat, but when removed there are usually no complications or adverse reactions. And yes, tonsillitis is contagious, highly.
