Why does my face turn red when I work out, run, play baseball - basketball?!

Question:

Why does my face turn red when I work out, run, play baseball - basketball?

After a hard workout it takes about an hour or more for my face to return to its normal tone.

Answers:

Short and sweet: increased blood flow. Your head turns red (and I bet if you pay attention your chest does too!) because your body is cooling itself by pumping blood to your skin surface. Your face and chest seem extra red because they have a LOT of capillaries at the surface.
