Sore knees?!

Question:

Sore knees?

I recently was practicing for soccer, and one day my knees were aching when i contracted them. It hurts on the inner side of my knees. It doesn't hurt when I walk, but sometimes it feels pain when i twist or turn it. I don't know if it is runner's knee or overused knees or just plain old sore knees. Sometimes I can't tell if the pain is in my knee joints or my muscle there. I am 15 and about to start a soccer season in a week. I asked a pharmacist (who happened to have knee problems and play soccer) and he said massage, ice and knee brace and i can go play my first game in a week. I need more advice, info, and suggestions. Should I go play if I wear a knee brace? Should I go see a doctor? What should I do? Is it runner's knee? How do I tell what it is? How long will it take to heal and be okay?

It is both knees but a little more in my left. I don't think it is acl because it is not searing pain and it's in both legs.

Answers:

A doctor is the best person to figure out what you have: it could be a torn or abraded meniscus (knee cap) or torn muscle/ligament or tendonitis. A general doc or better, an orthopedist, also could say if you should continue to play or stop and rest. The books say RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation if it's swollen. Then physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles and prevent any further problems. You might have to sit out a few games, but the alternative could be that you make it worse and it takes longer to heal. Which would you rather have?
