I have purple-brownish discoloration on one of my toenails- what is it?!

Question:

I have purple-brownish discoloration on one of my toenails- what is it?

The big toe of my left foot has what looks sort of like a bruise on it- a purplish mark on the nail, which stops just at the line of the half-moon shape at the base of the nail. There is no yellowishness or anything, but I don't believe it's a bruise because it won't fade like one. There is no pain or other side affects. I've cut away as much of the nail as possible...what could this be? Fungus (I didn't think so at first, as it's not yellow or peeling, but I don't know for sure)? Any thoughts?

Answers:

it could be a nail fungus and you can get an over the counter medicine for it. but i cut my toenail too short one time and i had what looked like a bruise. it was just blood that had went under my nail and it went away in a month. that could of happened to you too.
