Valium?Question?!

Question:

Valium?Question?

what exactly is this medication used for?Anxiety? or are there other uses?thanks

Answers:

Valium is in a class of medications referred to as sedatives/hypnotics. This means at lower doses, they decrease anxiety and agitation, and at higher doses, they make you fall asleep.

The chemical class is called the benzodiazepines, which work on the same part of the brain as alcohol. As a result, they have many similar benefits (think being buzzed or tipsy) and downsides (think addiction and life-threatening withdrawals).

Valium is approved for use in short-term anxiety states. Unfortunately, many physicians use it for long-term anxiety, and this is potentially dangerous since the medication's waste persists in the body for several days afterwards, resulting in inadvertent overdosing a couple weeks after finding what appears to be a reasonable dose.

Likewise, valium is a very common prescription drug of abuse. It is sought after on the streets since it has the most rapid onset of action of the benzodiazepines, and this results in a more intense high. There is no evidence to support in any forms of pain management, although it is frequently used in conjunction with opioids to extend or intensify their high.

Valium has several off-label use. It is used as a third-line agent to treat seizures, especially status epilepticus. It is also used somewhat controversially as a muscle relaxant.

As always, discuss these and any questions with your doctor.
