Still have white blood cells in urine?!

Question:

Still have white blood cells in urine?

I went to the doctor this week after having symptoms of a UTI (burning when I urinate, urge to urinate very frequently but only a tiny bit comes out, etc) She did a urine dip test and I had large amounts of white blood cells in my urine. She wrote me a prescription for Septra 800/160 which I am suppossed to take 2 times a day for 3 days. This is day 3 and I did a urine dip test at work (I work at a hospital) and it still showed large amounts of white blood cells in my urine as well as a trace of protein. Is this normal? I thought the infection would pretty much be gone by now...and I'm worried because I don't go back to the doctor for a recheck until next Monday.

Answers:

Do you still have the other symptoms of the UTI (burning, frequency)? Since today is your last day on the antibiotic, if I were you I'd call your Doctor and just tell them what you found. Maybe if the Septra didn't do the trick you need something else. I'm sure they don't want you to wait until Monday if you still have the UTI! I also work in the hospital and I've done the same thing (used a dipstick to check) and my Doctor was amused that I took matters into my own hands but wasn't upset or anything...don't be afraid to call. :) Just give them a call and see what they say...
