firstly, because your arms fold down over them making it harder for them to air out.
secondly because that stink is actually caused by the release of pheremones at that site. pheremones are chemical signals that allow animals to identify each other (and each others territories) while also allowing one sex to know if the other is ready to mate with yet as well and in early, early human history we used them for much the same thing. it is not conducive to a species to have brothers mating sisters...sooner rather than later the species would die out due to so many defects. this is the kind of thing pheremones play a role in. though in todays world they are shunned and thought smelly and unnatural the truth is we still use them on levels we aren't even conscious of.
