Have I overdosed on Zanax?!

Question:

Have I overdosed on Zanax?

I think I just swallowed two ranitidine pills, instead of one. You're supposed to take two a day -- one in the morning, and one before you go to bed. Did I overdose? If so, is it enough to really hurt me?

Answers:

Okay, there are two different drugs with similar names. Xanax, with an X, is a sedative in the benzo family. Zantac is the brand name for ranitidine, a stomach medication.

If you took two Xanax, it will depend on the dose you took (the dose of the pills), your weight, if you have been taking it for a while, and if you have other things in your system, like alcohol.

If it was Zantac, there shouldn't be a problem. You may experience some stomach upset, or some other unpleasant side effects, but you should be alright. Prolonged overdosing can cause liver or kidney problems, but one extra pill shouldn't hurt you.

**EDIT**

You should know that if it was Xanax, the sedative, you will probably get very sleepy, but it is a tremendously short-acting drug. Unlike other benzos, such as Valium, it clears your system fairly quickly. The biggest danger is having it interfere with your breathing, and unless you have pills which are of a huge dosage, you shouldn't have a problem, because the therapeutic threshhold is fairly high. If it makes you uncomfortable, go make yourself a cup of coffee or tea--the caffeine should help counteract the effects of the sedative.
