Sodium Amytal question again?!

Question:

Sodium Amytal question again?

My neighbour asked me to be with her when her GP comes around, as she wanted me to talk to him regarding the Sodium Amytal she was given for over 30 years. She had bad withdrawal symptoms as they suddenly stopped giving it to her without weaning her off it. She is 89.
The first thing he suggested was to give it to her again. When I asked him, if there is nothing else he could give her to help her sleep and if he is aware of how dangerous and addictive it is , he arrogantly replied:" I am giving it to her again, because the patient wants it. It would be unkind not to give them to her. She had them for 30 odd years, she is still alive, so they didn't do her any harm."
I have to admit, that I am furious inside, because some of her side effects (like problems with her digestive system) have stopped and all she needs is a help to sleep. Of course I had to keep my mouth shut, as it is not my right to interefere, but I think this is absolutely disgusting. Does anyone else agree with this?

In the past the same doctor has prescribed her antidepressants whilst she was on sodium amytal. On wikipedia, it says that those should not be taken together.
She was given Diazepam to help her to calm down until she gets the sodium amytal. Knowing that those again should not be given together, I asked him, if she should have a day or two break between the both and he said that it is no problem switching just like that. He was extremely patronizing, couldn't look me in the eye and then found an excuse and ran out of the house. He would not want to answer my questions (I was being very nice and asked them to have more information, as I am her carer, to be able to support her better).

Obviously my neighbour is addicted to it and was more than happy to be on them again.
Fair enough, if they didn't kill her in the past... What makes me furious is the attitude of the GP.
Her family are against this drug aswell, but there is little they can do.

Answers:

What quality of life does she have when on the sodium amytal? i do agree that the GP was in the wrong to talk to you like that, however with an 89 yr old patient the NHS would be looking at an acceptable quality of life ( Whatever that is)and unfortunately for someone of her age it is easy for the GP to give her what she wants not what she needs
