What could it be?!

Question:

What could it be?

I have noticed a sizable "ridge" like bulge that runs vertically from my sterum to my diaphram whenever I am lieing flat on my back and raise my shoulders as if to sit up or to do a crunch. I am somewhat over weight, 5'8" 220 lbs. What could be causing this bulge? There is no pain or discomfort.

Answers:

1. your diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that divides your abdominal contents from your chest cavity. You are unlikely to notice a line running between the sternum and diapragm.

2. it sounds like what you are describing may well be a divarication of the rectus abdominis muscle. It is quite common and nothing to worry about, but look it up. And if you are at all worried, I would go to see your doctor. Always best to get these things checked out.
