Severely swollen feet and ankles?!

Question:

Severely swollen feet and ankles?

I recently attended a four day concert in which I spent up to 11 hours a day standing around or walking in sandals. the last day i looked down to see that my ankles and feet were severely swollen (I had no pane). after I got bask I elevated and massaged them and the swelling went down. this morning they are swollen again ( not near as bad) and I am concerned that they may blow up again by the end of the day. anyone know what's going on here? how to fix it?

list source and experience please

Answers:

It certainly sounds like Oedema. I get this from time to time - especially if i've been standing for long periods of time or the weather temperature gets warmer. Oedema usually occurs around the ankles, calves and around the abdomen and can cause discomfort. You did the right thing by elevating your legs and massaging them to get the Lymph and Blood circulation going again. It is also a well known fact that if you don't drink enough fluid throughout the day, your body will 'hold onto' excess water so it is vital to drink as much fluids as you can (1.5ltrs-2) to keep the circulation and body tissues healthy - and prevent dehydration especially as the weather is getting warmer now! You could also try herbal water tablets which you can buy over the counter at Boots and other good stores. However, if you dont notice any improvement in the swelling or it gets worse, then please see your GP so he/she can rule out any underlying illness.
