Both legs amputated and still she smokes - would you have been as shocked as I w!

Question:

Both legs amputated and still she smokes - would you have been as shocked as I was today ?

Today I saw a woman lighting, then sucking greedily on a cigarette, while the young woman who was pushing her stood and waited, and as I stepped sideways to go past I suddenly noticed THE SMOKER HAD NO LEGS. Not even something to cover her up, her body just stopped at her buttocks. I was so shocked, that I was rude enough to stare. I know smoking causes the capillaries in the extremities to shut down, so that legs sometimes "die" from lack of blood and have to be amputated, but somehow I thought after that, people would stop smoking ?

Anyone else still want to complain about the smoking ban in public enclosed spaces on July 1st ?

Fair enough, you're quite right, I don't know that smoking caused her amputations, but it IS true that smoking can lead to amputations, ask anyone you know who works in the Health Service, and I jumped - perhaps unfairly - to that conclusion.

So, sorry about that. Smoking is obviously really good for you, and I urge all those who were so rude to take up the habit immediately.

Katie, yes of course I pass judgment on others - we all do - including you. What is your comment if it is not a judgment of me ?

bluebinjulie - well spotted ! Quite right, I'm not a smoker, stopped 20 years ago - best thing I ever did. You imply that I'm responsible for her smoking, which is a typical junkie's ploy, blaming others instead of taking responsibility. We all make judgments about each other, life would be impossible if we did not. No wonder you think this is a terrible world, with all these people judging you and forcing you to smoke. Get a grip, woman.

Answers:

I find patients that still smoke through a tracheostoma after having their larynx removed are even more disturbing. Or people with COPD, on oxygen, who smoke right underneath the steady flow of oxygen. Nicotine addiction is incredibly powerful and some will not quit no matter what complications they have had.
