Veterans Affairs Health Insurance and Assisted Living question?!

Question:

Veterans Affairs Health Insurance and Assisted Living question?

How do you move an elderly female relative with dementia, severe vision issues and depression from one assisted living facility under VA insurance to another state's (Florida) assisted living facility? What do I need to know? Medication refusal is also an issue. Please, help me. I am a caregiver and my extended family is at war over this. what documents/exams/laws do I need to know?

Answers:

You will need to contact the VA to get a list of approved assisted living facilities in the area you are moving to. You should visit those facilities in person to make sure that the facility is what you want and need. There may be a waiting list for some of the places. When you find one set an appointment to speak with the facility administrator and tell them about the move so they'll be ready to receive your relative without a break in care.

The VA can also tell you about the procedures that you must follow during the move. You will want to make sure you have a supply of her medication that will last the duration of the move.

Here is a link http://www.ncoa.org/ to the National Council on Aging. You can get a lot of good information here and can even get help as a caregiver.
