What is general anesthesia like?!

Question:

What is general anesthesia like?

hello, i about a week i am getting the ligaments in my shoulder shortened, and I have chosen to go for the general anesthesia. I have a couple of questions?
How is anesthesia given?
What are some side effects?
What was it like after anesthesia?

are there any tips about dealing with the nervousness before a surgery.

Answers:

I have had surgery several times over the past 45 years or so, for various things. I have always been very nervous beforehand.
My last surgery was this past January and before that, my last surgery was over 30 years ago. Well, it was SO much better this time around, I can't tell you! Everyone was telling me, "we have better medicine now" but I wasn't sure I believed them.

They put an IV in your arm and once they give you the anesthesia, you are "out" almost immediately. At least I was. I remember them telling me they were giving me the meds, and the next thing I knew, they were waking me up in the recovery room. I remember nothing of the surgery, which is the way I want it. The only side effect I had after the anesthesia was grogginess. I slept off and on for the whole first day. There was no nauseousness or any other unpleasant side effect.

When I was told there was a 2 hr. pre-op period, I just about flipped...but really it is not bad. Believe me, I'm a big wimp. Just try to take deep breaths and try not to be too nervous. It is much better now than it was in the "good old days" .

After the surgery, they will probably have you on a morphine drip for a while to reduce pain afterwards. I had a hip replacement and I really had no pain at all.

Good luck! I know it will go well:)
