I have just had full blood count haemoglobin level 12 instead of 13?!

Question:

I have just had full blood count haemoglobin level 12 instead of 13?

I then had further tests and this showed my iron stored in the body was low - I have a family history of anaemia , I am an insulin dependent diabetic and suffered from anaemia in my teens and twenties. I have looked at diet and I dont eat any meat at all just fish - I dont eat any vegatables. My GP has worried me by saying shes worried about internal bleeding but surely form a history of anemia and diet this seems amazing.

What do you think

Answers:

12 isn't that low, but as your ferritin (long-term iron stores) are low, you need to look at your diet. You need to eat red meat and leafy green veg, such as Brussel sprouts, cabbage and especially spinach. Drinking a lot of tea makes it difficult for your body to absorb iron, so cut down or have tea at different times from your meals. The good news is that dark chocolate has iron in it! If you are unable to take these foods, you may need an iron supplement. These can cause constipation or abdominal upset and do give you black poo!
It's right for your doctor to be thinking about any bleeding which might be going on (the usual causes are peptic ulcers or haemorrhoids) but your diet sounds pretty poor and could well be the cause.
