Anger and sadness?!

Question:

Anger and sadness?

This whole year, I have been feeling anger and sad because I quit being addict.

How can get over this anger and sadness instead of doing drugs?

Answers:

You need to find a way to release these feelings in a healthy way, right? Here are a couple of ideas:

Exercise might be your best choice because it's almost guaranteed to help you to feel better. This could be done in lots of ways: walking, jogging, aerobics at home or in a class (might be good to meet other people this way), any team sport. Box a heavy bag if you can and picture who or what you are angry at.

Another option would be volunteering somewhere that makes you feel good. If you love animals, for instance, you should be able to find an animal shelter, or rescue organization, that could really use your help. Think about what really interests you, or what you are good at, and then try to find a way that you could volunteer yourself in that capacity. Possibilities include a local food bank, homeless shelter, or your library -- be creative in your thinking. Helping other people out feels good, and you often discover that you are actually not as bad off as you'd thought.

Would you be comfortable attending some kind of group, whether it's for recovering addicts, or just everyday folks dealing with a variety of issues? If you can find a good group, the people there should listen and understand your struggles, and support you on the tough days.

Consider learning something new, something you've always thought about trying. A musical instrument, a foreign language, painting or drawing. Again, be creative in your thinking, and don't rule anything out.

I think the bottom line here is to keep in mind that you have REALLY accomplished something by quitting drugs, and by being determined to stay off of them. Give yourself a big pat on the back, as often as you need to. Then work on finding something that takes your heart and mind in a completely different direction. It might seem like a distraction at first, but it can grow into a passion that saves you, and others.
