Can cocaine really do that kind of stuff like it did to Crystal in the story or did I get it mixed up?

It was probably Chrystal.
Chrystal makes decisions herself not cocaine heroine or guns.
Chewing coca leaves will help you with hunger and fatigue from thin air while crossing the Andes mountains.
People decide to be good or bad- not drugs.
