Can using headphones for hours cause ear infections?!

Question:

Can using headphones for hours cause ear infections?

I have very sensitive ears (chronic ear infections for the past 4 years, but these past few months my ears have been ok), and I work at drive-thru now. Since I have started work, my ear infections are coming back. Now that I work at drive-thru I end up doing up to 8 hours straight of loud beeping and buzzing in my ear. Could this cause ear infections?

I can't lower the volume because otherwise I can't hear what the drive thru order is.

In addition, I am a music student, so after work I do many hours of music right under my ear (violin). My ears just feel terrible now! Can using headphones for hours cause ear infections?

I'm home sick today because of it, and if the culprit could be the hours of drive thru, I might ask for a different position at work and not drive thru.

Answers:

Sound won't cause an infection but perhaps the headphone is trapping moisture and causing a bacterial infection (like swimmers ear)... talk to your doc... see if they'd be willing to prescribe ear drops.

If you have persistent ear infections, what about having tubes put in? But maybe you've already done that if you have "bad" ears :-)
