Answers:

You don't need to be in the vicinity of your brother's vomit to "catch" his viral gastroenteritis. Just being in close contact with him could be enough. You can reduce your chance of getting infected by frequent handwashing, prompt disinfection of contaminated surfaces with household chlorine bleach-based cleaners, and prompt washing of soiled articles of clothing.

If you get sick, first see a doctor to make sure that you don't have some other illness. Then, you'll want to set yourself up with a puke bag -- a paper grocery bag, opened up and lined with old newspapers -- that you can carry around the house with you, and set next to your bed or the couch as you're lying there resting or watching tee vee. That way, you'll always have a place to vomit, and it won't get all over the floor like your brother's did.

Viral gastroenteritis can come with watery diarrhea, as well (you may end up hoping to just vomit!), so be prepared for that possibility. Either way, you should drink lots of fluids, so you don't become dehydrated.
