Question:
Why is it that when you hold your nose whilst taking foul tasting medicine it kills the taste?
Answers:
Taste is determined by sensors on the tongue and in the olfactory nerves of the nose. The areas of the tongue that taste sensors are found on will only tell you if something is sweet, sour, bitter etc. The smell of the food gives the brain much more information on the composition of the food, and therefore its taste. Holding your nose stops the olfactory sensors picking up smells, so the taste of the object is only determined by which sensors on the tongue it stimulates.
