Why do I have excessive hiccups?!

Question:

Why do I have excessive hiccups?

I have about 20-25 of them a day. It is just one sharp one and then it stops and 5 minutes later another one. This has been goign on for months. I don't know why this is happening. I am not nervous and do not eat fast. These hiccups come at the most random times.

Answers:

Hiccups in general are caused by a variety of causes.

It can be easily caused by taking a cold drink while eating a hot meal, eating very hot or spicy food, laughing vigorously or coughing, drinking an alcoholic beverage to excess, crying out loud (sobbing causes air to enter the stomach), some smoking situations where abnormal inhalation can occur (in tobacco or other smoke like cannabis, perhaps triggered by precursors to coughing, or in the case of cannabis, by precursors to laughter), or electrolyte imbalance.

Hiccups may also be caused by pressure to the phrenic nerve, which isnt as common.

If it continues to happen, and becomes any sort of a problem, see your doctor, just in case.
