Help! Taking Topamax, causing hyperventilation. Doctor said keep taking until I !

Question:

Help! Taking Topamax, causing hyperventilation. Doctor said keep taking until I get in. Not sure what to do?

I just started Topamax a few weeks ago for migraine prevention. I moved my dosage up to 50 mgs after a week of 25 mgs per night. Well, next day after the first does of 50 mgs I started having breathing problems. I have now hyperventilated several times at work. A few of these times to the point of almost fainting or falling. The doctor said to keep taking it, until I get in. She also said that if I can't breath to get myself to the doctor. What kind of medical advice is this? So, I need to know, would you just stop taking it or what? Also, is there anything I can do besides stop taking it to relieve these symptoms of hyperventilation? How long should it take for this to get out of my system? Finally, could this be cause by something else entirely? I know this is a side effect, but someone said it could just be anxiety? Help please.

Answers:

Any time you have an adverse reaction to a medication, you should see a doctor. The next best thing is to call a pharmacist or an emergency room and ask them of there is any danger in stopping the medication because of adverse reactions (your breathing problem.) As long as a licensed person verifies that there is no danger in stopping the medication, stop it and find a better doctor! Good luck!
