The doctor thinks my breathing problems are from reflux? Tell me more!?
I have been asking questions on here for months, my throat closing up, choking in my sleep, etc etc etc. They have checked my thyroid, breathing tests left and right, and chest xrays. Today I went in and the ENT numbed my throat through my nose and then looked in there. He is pretty convinced that it is Silent Reflux disease. I read the description and have had most of these symproms since childhood, they have just recently gotten severe though. These include Excess mucus, lump in throat, throat clearing, and heartburt... more too but not to an extent. I dont know how sever it is and they will be doing a barium swallowing test in about a week...What should I do in the meantime? Any other theories.. It is kind of odd that I would have this, I am only 25 and far from overweight... THANKS FOR ANY ADDED INFO!

As a Pediatrican, I have seen a few children with the diagnosis of 'asthma' who ended up with reflux disease. Once there reflux was treated- the 'asthma' was cured. Doctors have a hard time explaining it, however. We think that when stomach contents are "refluxed' up into the esophagus and airway, cough receptors may be triggered.
(reflux has been associated with Apnea in the newborn). My suggestion to you in the meantime is to try an antacid or now that Pepcid is Over the counter you can try that . Good luck .
(oh by the way- Barium swallow may not be sensitive enough to dx reflux, may need a ph probe or GI consult if result is negative - good luck)
