What causes shin splints?!

What causes shin splints?
ive had them before... and now i have them in my right leg
could crossing my legs almsot all the time be the cause?
in dance we havent been stretching as much and now the recitals this weekend so ive been stretching more, could this be the cause too?

Yeah i think the muscle is weekly attached to the bone and it is an irritation to the surface of the bone as much as the muscle, quite painful actually, seems to me it's more common in a highly developed muscle than one not so.
