Buspirone (BusPar) is a mild anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) agent. Xanax is an anxiolytic and Paxil is an anti-depressant. I do not believe it is chemically similar to either drug. BusPar is often a first choice as an anti-anxiety agent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That is true of all psycho-active medications because psychiatry, and medicine in general, is not an exact science. Every person is different and reacts differently to medication for a variety of reasons.
