My New Year's Resolution Is To Quit Smoking...?!

Question: ...any advice on how best to quit?

Answers: ...any advice on how best to quit?

I smoked for 60 years. Mostly 80 per day, never less than 40.
Gave up 3 years ago and it was a piece of cake.
Go to your GP who should have a Smoking Clinic.
They will probably tell you to think about it for two weeks and then come back.
When you see the right person, tell them you want 24 hour
clear patches and also the Nicorette Inhalaters, if possible.
If they won't give you a prescription for the Inhalaters, buy them yourself in the chemist.

When you put the patch on for the first morning, it takes about
30 + minutes to start working and the panic hit me after 5 minutes. I used the Inhalater and in seconds I could feel myself relaxing.

Most fags contain 0.8 to 1.0 mg of nicotine.
Each Inhalater contains 10mg of clean nicotine, which doesn't harm you and gives about 20 mins of inhalation time.
This can be used as 4 by 5mins or any other permutation of the time.

It's quite nice to sit in a restuarant / pub etc gently puffing on
the Inhalater while everybody else is running outside for a smoke. (Also good on planes)

If I can give any further info. please let me know.

u go to the best personal doctor and consei about it

I gave up for 5 years once very easily. I read Alan Carr's book The Easy Way To give up smoking.
Best of luck.
Stick at it, and don't slip back like me.

Dont ask me Elvis,Im going to try and give up too.
I did give up a few years back, and managed for about three months but it was harder then because smoking was allowed in pubs so any time I went out and friends were smoking it was really hard to resist.
I just decided to stop one day and that was that,I dont believe in those patches and things,I think you need willpower and lots of it. Good luck.

Keep away from smokers.

Keep yourself busy.

patches ?

Don't think about it, dont get bored.

"gag" for something else, get addicated to jam minirolls instead ?

There is a new pill out that people are raving about. I've known 4 people who were able to quit during this past year with the help of it. Can't remember its name: starts with a "C" and ends with some like "trix." Your doc will know--and it does require a prescription.

When I quit in 1991 I went to a smoking cessation class and all that was available at that time was that horrible tasting gum. I chewed one piece and then quit cold turkey!!!

I've never regretted it and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. I feel SO much better, my clothes last longer and, best of all, my mouth no longer tastes like an ashtray.

Good luck!

I have been trying to quit smoking too, but its just saying that you are quitting it, quitting it is hard man,

hi. good luck... i'm trying myself, also. :)
first off, tell yourself that they taste like crap, and that they make you smell bad, and benefit nobody, not even yourself. haha
try going as long as you can... as in- pace yourself. try not smoking one every half hour... go a couple of hours before smoking one. cut back on your smokes. it's the hardest right after you get something to eat. the "normal" thing to do is fire up.... that's what i was stuck on. keep it up... you can get through this.

I quit about 12 years ago and it was hell for a while but once I found breathing a lot easier and my breath and clothes didn't smell, and,AND my wallet was fatter I felt really good, try and avoid smokey places stick to it and good luck

I used the nicotine gum (no patches when I gave it up) Couldn't quite manage it on will power alone and the gum was just enough. I only needed to use it for a few days although I think they recommended 3 months at the time.

Whatever you do, Good Luck. The cravings shouldn't last very long.

I quit recently and it's been so easy!! Now that is strange because I've been smoking for 35 years and have tried to give up so many times before. I've had acupuncture, hypnosis and cold turkey and non of those worked so this is what I did this time. Firstly a few years ago I switched to rolling my own cigs. The tobaco has less additives, you make them smaller therefore less tobaco and if you put one down unfinnished it goes out so instead of lighting another you can finnish that one. Next, cut down slowly so you are only smoking at the most desperate times of the day. For me that was first thing in the morning, after meals and last thing at night. And finaly don't do it on New Years day!! Do it on a preset day not too far in advance but New Years day puts you under too much pressure. Talk to your doctor, mine was great we talked about it for about 30 minutes even though he had a packed surgery. He explained why the patches weren't good for me and that he didn't think much of the new tablets which were originaly developed as an anti-depresent but found to make people sick if they smoked! A bit like Anti-abuse for alcoholics.
I have no desire for a cig whatsoever and don't like the smell any more. My son still smokes in the house and car but it has no effect on me at all. I'm not anti-smokers either, if you can give up for you, great if not, enjoy!

It's all down to refusing to listen to that little voice in your head which says "Isn't it time you had a *** now?" First rule, stop buying them, next rule stop accepting them when offered (or do accept them until your friends get fed up of you accepting and ask you why you don't go and buy some) and then as each day passes congratulate yourself for abstaining and have another treat instead, say a chocolate liqueur but don't resort to chewing gum as I don't think that will take your mind off it. You will gradually learn to despise smoking. Don't do deadlines, stop now and by the time you get to New Year you may have cracked it. There are no pluses to smoking - it spoils your appetite, it stains your teeth, it harms your lungs, it makes your clothes stink, it burns your clothes - who has not had a garment spoiled by a cigarette burn? - it secretes all the symptoms of a cold and you PAY for this "privelege!" Just enjoy breathing easily and being able to taste your food.
P.S. I cannot believe the word gaf has been given the * treatment.

The truth is, there is no single method to stop smoking. You need to really want to quit, then its down to sheer willpower! I wish you luck...

I quit last jan 4 my new years resolution, it was tough (especially after meals, drinking, seeing my mates smoke and even harder when I was really p*ssd off about something!) Its more about willpower. about a month or two after I quit I was in a bad mood and was nearly about to give in but my sister said "just hold off this moment will pass".... and it did lol.. I was glad she was there n she said that coz If I just had 'that cigarrette' I know fine I would still be smoking now!
it is really tough but very much worth it in the end.. ya just have to think no and stick to it! in time your cravings will be less and less to the point ya won't even like the smell of it! (it helps being a lil stubborn too like me!! :) ) goodluck!

Persevere and don't crack if you have a smoke. just start again! Don't try to cut down first that just doesn't work and ask yourself what controls your life you or the fags? Think cleaner smelling clothes and hair, fresher younger complexion and no brown stains on your teeth and fingers. Good Luck Its not easy

Well..I quit in January, however after a really horrible year (2 surgeries, brother in law got kicked out of parents, now living with us, and my husband lost his job) I cracked 7 1/2 months of being smoke free. I'm going to go again after the New Year (Going to a big party with lots of smoke, and this is too close now to quit.). Anyways, I would try Laser Therapy. That is what I did. It really did the trick. I had tried to quit before, and never made it past a week. This I did very well for 7 1/2 months. It is like acupuncture but they use lasers. It doesn't hurt at all. It takes about 20 minutes, and it takes the physical need of, all the other chemicals and nicotine, your cigs away. You still get some cravings afterward, and they reccomend drinking water whenever you get a craving. I also used toothpicks when driving (difficult time for me). Whatever method you use, you have to WANT to quit smoking. If you don't want to quit, you won't be able to succeed.

Net doctor has a great on line support 90 day programme. Check it out might help. All the best.

take up wanking instead - keeps you fit
