Hi,

By far the fastest and easiest way to get rid of a cramp is via reciprocal inhibition.

In muscular movements, when you actively contract a muscle its antagonist (opposite) muscle/s is/are forced to relax- even if its cramping.

If its your hamstrings that are cramping, lie flat on the ground face down and push your knee and thigh into the ground and hold it for about 10 seconds- this will reciprocally inhibit the hamstrings and force them to relax.

If its your calves, sit on a chair and pull your toes up toward the ceiling against the Resistance of your hands for 10 seconds- this will reciprocally inhibit the calves.

Best of luck

You could have a low potassium level. Try eating bananas and rub your leg to ease out the cramp. If they continue, see a doctor,,,, they can give you a potassium supplement if that's your problem.

Potassium is what is usually needed --a banana everyday could help--a supplement is also available---but you may have RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME--pins and needles that are uncomfortable and cause the legs to constantly have to move. You need a doctor for that issue--but it is not a big deal. Cramps come from over exertion--or lack of vitamins and minerals--a crummy diet or just a medical issue--a doctor is your very best way to get help. Good luck

There is no single cause for cramp.
Basically a cramp is where a muscle performs a contraction with no control. That is, it contracts to its maximum and until it wears out its fuel source. This can leave the muscle bruised and feeling very tired and usually causes great pain during the event. Fortunately, it usually only occurs in a part of the muscle controlled by one nerve ending and therefore does not involve the whole muscle and cause major damage.
This leads to the causes being related to either a chemical imbalance in the muscle or in the nerve controlling it. This can be due to the area being too hot or too cold, in this case reverse the cause.
If the chemical imbalance lies in the muscle then a contraction/relaxation cycle is controlled by calcium and magnesium. Usually we have enough calcium (unless you have osteoporosis) and we lack in magnesium which can be easily supplied by supplements.
If the chemical imbalance lies in the nerve the activation/deactivation relies on a balance of sodium and potassium. Usually we get enough sodium from our regular diet (unless you are vegetarian) and the imbalance lies with potassium which we can get from bananas.
To quickly stop a cramp it is necessary to know the activation point of the muscle. This can be found in advanced anatomy manuals for each muscle. You then apply pressure to the point and the cramp drops out quickly.
Sorry if this does not give you a quick fix procedure, but there is none that I know of that work for everyone. After 25 years as a massage therapist I wish I knew a quick fix. If you find one, let me know at my name @ yahoo. Thanks. Good Luck.
