Why must i have an emergency contact?!

Question: The last time I had to go to ER, they asked me for next of kin, or another emergency contact. I did not have one. The nurse wouldn't go on with my registration and triage until i came up with an emergency contact. Why do I have to have one? I mean if i get hurt I'm already in the hospital. Maybe I don't want anyone to be informed when I'm dead or dying.

You were caught in a power struggle. She is the GateKeeper. None shall pass unless she say so.

I have a simple, effective response to bossy nurses on this question.

My emergency contact is GOD. If she doesn't like it, she can take it up with my emergency contact.

I did have one nurse that was not willing to accept my answer. She thought that I was just being a smart-@ss, and she was not going to proceed until she got an answer that she liked. As I was bleeding copiously, and in a fair bit of pain, and not at all tolerant of authoritarian nurses at the time, I flung blood in her face. Then I told her to go talk to my emergency contact about how she might improve her caring and compassion skills in the medical profession. I suggested that she might pray that she not get any infectious diseases.

The next nurse, the one who completed the form, was much more lenient about filling in every God Damned blank on her form whilst I bled. In fact, she was rather nice to me. Dunno why. Could have been fear, or could have been that she didn't like Ms I am the boss of the universe Nurse either.

So far, so good. At least I am still here. I gather that the medical practitioners would prefer to not have to talk to my emergency contact concerning my death. Thus far they have provided competent service in a timely manner.

u shoulda told her that u didnt want anyone informed

or a simple " i have no one! im the last one left! he got them all"
lol

because if you died someone needs to be informed to claim your body or if there is complications they need someone to sign forms giving consent for like blood transfusions or something where you would be incapable of doing so maybe you dont want anyone to know of you death but your family would certainly like to know it would be unfair of you to disallow family members knowing such things

The point of it is so that if you are found uncontious or unwell somewhere outside the hospital and they identify you they know who to contact to tell them because other wise if no one knows say your friend didn't find out and you had planed to go out to the Pub on Friday and you didn't show up. He could report you missing and that would be a waste of Police time!

in case something happens to you and you can't pay the bill!!! and if you can't decide something for yourself the other person will decide if they take a kidney out or not!

I can't speak for other hospitals or computer systems, but in ours you can't progress past that page in the booking screen until all of the fields are filled. I just enter "Unk" (Unknown) in all of the fields that the patient won't or can't answer.
