I've been taking 10/500 loratabs for several years for chronic pain am I add!

Question: If you've been taking them for that many years I have to assume it has been under a doctors care. I too have been taking pain medication for years and depending on the type of medication and the dose all determine to what extent you are dependent. If you are worried about it talk with your doctor. He is really the best one to be asking.

If you couldn't live without them then yes you are addicted.

Well you become addicted to them if you think you have to have them, it is not just an addiction when you take them for the pain you could become more dependent on them. I suggest you go to the Dr. and request a non-narcotic pain med. that you will not become so reliable on.

yes you are but addicted is only a medical term. Are you abusing them is a better question

Hey Accident Prone

The word addiction gets thrown around a lot, but it's important to tell the difference between tolerance, withdrawal and addiction.

Tolerance means you need a higher dose of the medication to get the same effect.

Withdrawal means that if you stop taking the medication, your body has a physical reaction because it has become dependent on the medication.

Tolerance and withdrawal are part of what happens with certain medications, it's not a reflection on you or some sign of a character weakness.

Addiction means that you continue to use the medication in spite of negative consequences. Examples might be that you are taking more than the prescribed dose, or even though you are not able to do the things you are usually able to do.

Tolerance and withdrawal are issues everyone who has to take narcotic medications have to weigh in their decision making; addiction is pretty uncommon, despite all the hoopla about it.

Well your body has been built up a tolerance yes and you would not be able to just stop taking them cold shoulder...you would go through withdrawals. There is a difference between being addicted and dependent on pain medications. If you are taking them regularly and frequently but as directed and responsibly to treat and manage your pain, then you are dependent on them. Being addicted involves taking them because you like the feeling, taking them more than you actually need them, etc. If you are asking because you want to get off of them, talk to your prescribing doctor about suggesting a plan to wean off of them.

i dont no what your saying 10/500 if your saying you take 10....500mgs of vicodin this dont make sense.....ANY WAYS YOUR VERY HOOKED IF YOU TAKE A NARCOTIC OVER 2 MONTHES YOUR HOOKED....

there is a difference between DEPENDENT and ADDICTED. there is not enough info to really make an assessment. there are people who have chronic pain due to a chronic condition who are dependent on pain meds to manage their pain and have a better quality of life. this is not the same as a parson who needs the pain meds to "just get thru" the day. an addiction may start out as a treatment for physical pain but then moves on to where the person is no longer taking the meds for physical reasons but more for mental issues call your DR
