Broken Hips??!

Question: I'm on vacation on the other side of the country, but just found out this morning that a gal I know was involved in a car accident with a drunk driver last night.

A friend just called me to let me know that both of her hips are broken, her spine is fractured, and it appears that she may have a traumatic head injury as well.

The information that I can find online in relation to revery periods for broken hips is limited mostly to the elderly, and she is only 22 years old. I know from the call that she's heading into the operating room shortly to start drilling pins everywhere. She can move her toes, but it seems that her injuries are not allowing her to move her legs (for obvious reasons). Does anybody know how long it may be before she's out of a wheel chair?

Thanks.

At least 6 months, but possibly much longer. It sounds like she has a very long road ahead of her and the sad fact is she may never be the same. She will likely have at least a year to two years of physical therapy. She will be in tremendous pain. I am very sorry for her, those are extremely difficult injuries to recover from. I hope you will be a good friend to her during this time.
She may also have some additional surgeries ahead of her. A nice gift would be a portable DVD player and some noise canceling headphones... hospital nights are long and lonely and most people are in rooms with others and it is difficult to watch TV at night for fear of disturbing others with the volume ( plus there is nothing on ) get her some great DVDs... preferably some funny/upbeat ones.... and lots of magazines bear in mind it will probably be a week or more before she is up to reading... depending on the head injury It may be much longer

I would be more concerned with the head injury than the broken hips.
