I find that over-the-counter sleeping pills don't always work. I'm not sure if you are taking prescription or OTC pills. You can become dependant (mentally if not physically) to either.

I feel your pain. I've gone to work after a night of zero sleep. Once I even had to report to jury duty after a night of no sleep. The later it gets, the more stressed you become, and the harder it is to fall asleep! If this happens to you more than a few times a year, preventative measures are in order.

Here are a some things that you can do that may help:

Try to eat your last meal at least an hour or more before bedtime.

Take a hot relaxing bath before getting into your pjs. Clean pjs and fresh clean sheets really seem to help me.

If the quiet bothers you, get a cheap box fan and turn it on in the room.

The hardest thing for me was to not drink anything with caffeine in it after 2pm at the latest!

Sometimes changing locations when you are having a really bad insomnia attack (ugh it's 3am and I have to get up in a few hours!) can help. A few times I've been able to get on the couch and fall asleep in 10 minutes or so. One time it even worked for me to just switch ends of the bed, putting my pillow where my feet were!

Hope some of these tips help.

Is this recent or an ongoing problem? If you are just suffering insomnia for a night or two it's nothing to worry about, you might be a little stressed or it could be a hormonal thing; you might even be sleeping without knowing it, sometimes you can be in a kind of 50-50 state of being awake and asleep at the same time, in which case you should continue to rest as best you can.

If you really can't sleep, get up, have a cup of coffee or tea and watch TV or something for a while; also, make sure the room isn't too hot, after an hour of moving around you may notice that the room is a lot warmer than you thought it was when you were in bed. Go back to bed when you feel like lying down again.

Looks like your organisim dosen't want to sleep. It could be for many reasons such as if you are sleeping in a new spot, or you might be thinking about something. Like when once i couldn't go to bed because i didnt have a good place to sleep try to have a hot bath before bed and switch your sleeping place.
Good Luck!

lay off the pills, go out and get some fresh air and don't worry about it. Eventually your body will give in and you will get sleepy.

do a lot of sports outside, keep beeing busy all day (I don't mean computer :-)) or just go again to see a doctor. But there will come the time when the body takes what it needs...

Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/ for more info
