I love my job. I am an EMT in SC. Let me tell you how I got my certification. I went to school for six months. Lots of book work, studying, labs, clinicals, etc, etc. Some days were fun and other days were boring as all get out. I not only had to get certified for the state of SC, I also had to get certified on National Registry standards (www.nremt.org). I had to take a computer test, which was nationaly registry and I had to perform all my skills that I learned in school infront of DHEC (Department of Health & Environmental Control - this is who regualtes our Medical services in Emergency Medicine in SC). Then once I got certified, I had to study our county's Standing Orders to be able to work in my county. Now I have to go to something called IST (In Service Training). IST basically allows us EMT's to keep our certification w/out having to go through a refresher course.
Hope this has helped you any...!

It varies from state to state and there are different levels of training ...

Well this depends where in the world you live. However in the United States, in most states, there are 3 recognized levels of certification. EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic. To become a EMT-B in most states all you need to do is take a class that usually consists of 3 hours lecture, and 3 hours lab time a week, for a semester. You would then have to take both a practical and written test to become certified. EMT-Bs are allowed to provide basic life-support, EMT-B is usually the lowest level of certification required to work on an ambulance. In a ambulance service that answers 911 calls EMT-Bs usually work with a Paramedic partner, and usually do most of the driving.
To become an EMT-Intermediate you would need to take 1 or 2 classess more after the EMT-Basic class. EMT-I's can give some drugs, and start IVs, among other intermediate skills.
To become a EMT-Paramedic you must go through at the very least an approx. 18 month long "Certification" program. With some Paramedics getting Associate, and Bachelors degrees as well. Paramedics can do pretty much all basic and advanced prehospital assessment and intervention. Cardiac monitoring, IVs, Intubations, as well as give about any drug the medical director allows them to.
If you are interested in a career in EMS, becoming a Paramedic is what you will want to do.
I always love to finding people taking an interest in the career I have come to love so much. Feel free to contact me with any further questions you may have! ;-)

It varies everywhere, there is diffrent rules, regs, and levels.

I LOVE MY JOB!!! its awesome..but its not for everybody i would recommend contacting a service in your area to see if they would allow you to do volunteer time or some "ride time" with one of their trucks just so you can get the feel for it and see if its what you really want to do. I saw something that described ems at Hours of boredom with occasional moments of sheer terror..this is VERY TRUE!!! I work for a small private service and my co-workers have become a second family for me...This isnt a job to have just to have a job..this is something that becomes your life..something you have to love to do..otherwise you wont make it in this field.
To get an idea about the regulations in your state you can check out your states dhec website..i know our state dhec site has info on there. (SC) and you can also check out www.nremt.org for info also..got any questions feel free to ask... refer to post before mine about certification...lol..thats my homeboy and actually we are working together right now..lol- see what we do at work sometimes??? then again we arent in a very busy call area eaither!! contact me or him if you would like to see pics of any calls (mvas) to give you a good idea of somethings you'll see.
