Should I extend my disability? Is this a good idea? How do I do that?!

Question: I have a spinal fusion disease (ankylosing spondylitis)and Fibromyalgia. I have been off for a month on short term disability. My medicine was going to be pretty hard-core, but I haven't been sick like I expected. In the meantime my condition has gotten worse. I'm hurting all over again. My fingers are in terrible shape and can't imagine typing for 8 hours a day or having to sit up in a chair for that long either. I can barely concentrate sitting in my computer chair right now. Should I ask my Rheumatologist for an extension? Could I lose my job? I am unable to get FMLA right now b/c I have only been with my company for 8 months. I just don't think going back right now would help my condition at all. Please help! I'm scared of asking her and I'm scared of going back so soon.

You should really ask her about it. This could make your condition worse, so it's not a good idea. Talk to your Rheumatologist for an extension. If they want to fire you for it, then they don't deserve you.

It is really difficult to work when you are in pain all day! I know, I am in pain most days also! f you need more time, ask for it! The best thing that has helped my pain is acupuncture, and yoga also minimized my pain. Try it, you'll like the results! Much better than pain relievers, which can actually exacerbate your pain in the long run!

You can't be at work in pain. You need more time off.Talk to your doctor about it.
