Have I broken my thumb? Sprained?!

Question: Earlier today, I jammed my thumb into my brother's side and it hurts. It does bend, but it hurts slightly when I bend it.It hurts when I press and when I squeeeze it. I can barely hold onto things with it. I don't want to go to the doctor, for nothing. But I have never broken a bone and I want to be sure

You most likely sprained your thumb, but nothing more.
If anything, the most you could have done is make a hair-line fracture on your thumb, but if there is no swelling, and you can bend it, then i highly doubt that.

For now, just don't use your thumb, put ice on it for 10-20 minutes a couple of times a day. If it still hurts after like, 5 days, then you should see a doctor

That'll teach you to annoy your brother. It's just a sprain.

Well it should hurt, considering how you used it. A trip to the ER may be in order they can Xray it and tell you how to treat it. I am sure you will not do that one again. get well soon and Merry Christmas

I did the same thing this week, but mine was from someone landing on my nail and me sliding away from it during basketball practice.
I didn't want to go to the doc either, but my dad is one so i didn't have to go. mine felt the same way i can bend it but when i go to far it hurts, when i squeeze it or press on it, it hurts like getting punched in the face. Mine is fractured really bad almost like broken. but i refuse to have xray and a cast put on, so my dad said to ice it during the day, for me also right before and after a bball game or practice, and I tape it straight and well in line so it doesn't hurt. you probably just fractured it a little, so i would just wrap it with tape and ice it a couple times a day. and be careful with it. If it doesn't heal or feel better in a couple weeks, more like a month if u r in sports go and see your doc. if u r in sports, wrap it well before games or practice to keep from further damage
Good luck with it and happy holidays

put a small splint on it and tape it up. That's all you can do, other than taking an anti-inflammatory, like Motrin, or take 3 aspirin every 4-6 hours.
Peace
