Choking questions?!

Question: I have a few questions about choking...

1.) How big is an object usually for a dangerous obstruction in an adult and child?

2.) How dangerous are bones and what sizes of bones?

3.) What is the difference in size of object in parital and whole airway obstruction?

4.) Does the size of the object and its danger for obstruction have anything to do with its texture or no?

Thank you,

A five star rating will be given for a thorough answer.

Thanks again

1. Usually, I would estimate it at the size of a piece of meat that the individual would bite off. If not chewed, this would be a prominent choking hazard, and a good determination of size for the individual.

In a child, it is almost anything that you have traditionally thought of like coins, dice, adult hard candy, etc.

2. I would say to avoid bones almost all of the time in terms of eating them. What size, again, would be determined by the individual.

3. Doesn't matter. Whole or partial airway obstruction is based on the degree of obstruction. Can they breathe or cough - is any air moving or not - is what determines whether it is a partial or whole obstruction.

4. This is tricky, but I would say yes. Sticky type foods, or things like marshmallows that fill up the space they are in are probably worse than slippery pieces of candy, and the like.

I used to have what was called a "choke tube" where you could measure an item to see if it would be a potential hazard for the person to put into their mouths. I tried to find a link for you where you could get one, but I couldn't find one. The link I have included does have some great information, though!

They said something about a toilet paper tube being a near equivalent, but I would say that would be for an adult male, as a loose guide.

Hope this helps, and I hope you take a CPR class! Best wishes!
