"Growing Pains" are your body's way to tell you that it is changing.

A typical "growing pain" should be a sort of dull ache (occasionally sharpish), and only last a few hours to a day at most. It may or may not come back a few days later.

If the pain is acute or continues for more than a day, you could have injured yourself. Try to think of any activity you were engaged in that could have caused an injury to the area. Wht you are thinking is a "growing pain" in your ankle could be a sprain, etc...

If the pain is VERY acute, or has continued continuously for a couple of days, go to a doctor! It could be simply a dietary issue, to something life treatening, but while the severity of the situation is variable, the need for treatment isn't!

One final possibility...it could simply be an over use injury (i.e.: excessive exercise without allowing the muscles to repair). If you are exercising alot, remember to rotate the muscle groups you work, giving each a minimum of 16-24 hours to recover, since exercise actually damages muscle tissue! (Although the damaged tissue, when repaired, is stronger than before the "injury" occurred!)
