Nurses I have a question please!?!

Question: I'm a new CNA, just started in October. I have a patient that I have assigned to me a couple days a week. He's in his early 40's, alert and has MS. I have to help him dress and help him put on his condom catheter. Other CNAs there have warned me that he gets erections sometimes and has asked them to do inappropriate things to him. What should I say or do if he ever gets an erection while I'm helping him with his catheter? I'm a virgin, so this would be SO awkward and embarrassing for me. I'd probably be shocked. Haha. I would appreciate any answers! Thanks!!!

An erection is a parasympathetic response, he can not control it. But, he can control his behavior. If an erection occurs just ignore it, if he asks you to do something about it, then that is where he oversteps the behavior line. Sternly remind him why you are there, he will not ask again.

Keep in mind, you are new and still have milk breath and the other nurses could be just teasing you...

Well, as a nursing student, I've been told that it's normal for a guy to have an erection during a male examination. I assume it would be the same when inserting a condom catheter too. Just do your best to ignore it and do what you're suppose to do.

But in your situation, when he asks you do to inappropriate things, you can say:

-"I don't appreciate you doing/asking me.... it's inappropriate.

Totally ignore it. If he says anything inappropriate, just say, "That's an inappropriate thing to say, sir."
