they make stuff, a liquid, you can put on the nails and let it dry; and it tastes yucky when the kids chew on their nails....he'll stop

omg so am i!
but i stopped since my mom calles my name when i do it, so i suggest you call your son when he starts bitting

Try putting a pair of snug fitting but light gloves on his hands. Then reward him for how long he allows the gloves to stay on. This takes the attention away from the nail biting while still providing a barrier. A brush-on bitter tasting nail coating (get online or at your local pharmacy) is also an idea (perhaps put it on while he is asleep so that it isnt a big issue). I'd stay away from any behavior on your part that calls attention to the nail-biting directly.

.

give him something else to chew on, and i agree with the last answerer, there is something to makethe nails taste horrible...

nail polish remover is nasty tasting (it was dryed on my fingers)

They actually have a product for this at the drug store, it's kind of like clear nail polish that tastes horrible. Just go there and ask, I'm not sure of what the name of it is.

put chillie on his hands, i used to chew on m sleeves and my mom did that i stop after the first time

I've read that children who suck their thumbs aren't aware of it sometimes. Same thing with biting nails. I've been battling that battle for many years, one day deciding I'm going to stop. I've relapsed many times, but managed at many points along the way to have beautiful nails and French manicures! Anyway, I read an article on thumb sucking, and that children need to be made aware that they're biting their nails. Simply tell your son he's biting his nails-- not in an angry tone or a frustrated one, just as if you were saying it was raining or snowing. I think once he knows he's doing it so much, he'll start paying closer attention to it.

An alternative, is a special nail polish that goes on clear and has a TERRIBLE taste. My mother used to be a nail biter, she used the polish, and it worked for her. It never worked for me, but you can try.
